A theater company most terrible is about to stage a murder most foul … no good can come of this. Actually, these wannabe thespians will be lucky to make it through opening night without some real corpses stacking up, because this is The Play That Goes Wrong. And boy, does it. But what’s a chaotic series of mishaps for them makes for “the funniest play Broadway has ever seen” (Huffington Post) and proof that sometimes a show can be so wrong, it’s right. Broadway’s most award-winningest comedy, The Play That Goes Wrong has racked up more laurels than Caesar, conquering stages from Paris to London to Broadway, and now it’s returning to wreak hilarious havoc on New World Stages. See for yourself why Forbes said, “You’ll never have a better time in a theater!”

Buttercup building in DTLA with interactive art installations and exhibits inspired by iconic horror flicks, including the first chapter of IT, The Shining, The Lost Boys, A Nightmare on Elm Street and Beetlejuice. Introducing the new Teatro Latino at Marietta’s New Theatre in the Square! Marietta’s New Theatre in the Square presents In The Heights to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month! Over the course of the Tony award-winning musical, In the Heights, we encounter the many colorful residents of Washington Heights — a New York City neighborhood on the brink of change. Usnavi, a first generation Dominican-American corner bodega owner, and his friends and family are dealing with the pressures of rising rents and closing neighborhood businesses. As one family struggles to figure out how to pay for an Ivy League tuition for their brilliant and hard working daughter, a young woman is trying to put a down payment on a new apartment, and Usnavi himself is trying to get back to the Dominican Republic to reconnect with his roots after the death of his parents. In Washington Heights, community is everything, and we see how each of these individuals struggles to survive and how these same individuals come together as a community to mourn their losses and rejoice in their triumphs. Over the course of the show, we see the hard-working residents of Washington Heights grapple with love and lust, identity and racism, all while the prospect of a winning lottery ticket hangs in the air, potentially changing the livelihoods of the people and the community forever. This revolutionary new musical combines Latin rhythms and dance with hip-hop lyrics to tell a captivating story about what it means to chase your dreams as you cling to your roots, and to celebrate the community from which you grew.

The show begins with some silly, quick-moving improv games (Think Whose Line Is It Anyway?). Then the Players raise the stakes with longer, more connected scenes so good they seem scripted. But they’re not: Everything that happens at Black Cat Licorice Theater is discovered in the moment.

The iconic film Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner, starring Spencer Tracy, Sidney Poitier and Katharine Hepburn, premiered in 1967 — just six months after anti-miscegenation laws were struck down by the Supreme Court in Loving v. Virginia. Adapting the piece for the stage in 2013 was a tall order: A lot about modern society had changed, and the film’s mega-stars had long-since passed away. Yet racial tensions continue to divide the country more than 50 years later. Playwright Todd Kreidler was up to the task, though, and managed to bring to the stage a compelling drama that speaks to today’s sensitivities, and even opting for a less certain ending that leaves the door open for conversation around the topic of inter-racial relationships. See Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner through a modern lens at Scottsdale’s Don Bluth Theatre.

A bona fide guitar hero and perennial poll-winner, Al Di Meola has been recognized internationally over the past four decades as virtuoso of the highest order. A prolific composer and prodigious six-string talent, Di Meola has amassed over 20 albums as a leader while collaborating on a dozen or so others with the likes of the fusion supergroup Return To Forever (with Chick Corea, Stanley Clarke and Lenny White), the celebrated acoustic guitar trio featuring fellow virtuosos John McLaughlin and Paco de Lucia, and the Rite of Strings trio with bassist Clarke and violinist Jean-Luc Ponty. And while his dazzling technique on both acoustic and electric guitars has afforded him regal status among the hordes of fretboard aficionados who regularly flock to his concerts, the depth of Di Meola’s writing, along with the soulfulness and the inherent lyricism of his guitaristic expression, have won him legions of fans worldwide beyond the guitar aficionado set.

This Eagles tribute band couldn’t have picked a better name than “The Boys of Summer.” Even though the legendary hit song and iconic music video were originally released by Don Henley as a solo tune, the Eagles played it in concert, and it’s been covered by acts as varied as Spanish trance artist DJ Sammy, indie rockers The Ataris and pop-rock songstress KT Tunstall. There also happens to be an intriguing lullaby version of the song by kids group Jammy Jams. These particular Boys of Summer, though, are planning to rock Upland’s historic art-deco Grove Theater with all of the Eagles’ greatest hits.
The Legacy Home Tour is Alameda’s most exciting architectural event of the year. Every year, on the fourth Sunday in September, a selection of curated homes open their doors to tour visitors, who encounter history, inspiring restorations and modern living in these architectural beauties. This year’s event, sponsored by Alameda Municipal Power, is particularly exciting with the inclusion of Alameda’s own General Electric Demonstration house located in Alameda’s Fernside District. Built in 1936, it is one of the unique homes GE built across America to show homeowners how electric appliances would modernize their lives. “With our 132-year legacy of providing Alameda homes with low-cost, reliable electricity, Alameda Municipal Power is proud to help illuminate the city’s residential historical treasures by sponsoring the 2019 Legacy Home Tour,” said Nico Procos, Alameda Municipal Power’s general manager. Event goers enjoy the selection of homes, the detailed descriptions in the brochure, the friendly docents, and the opportunity to see each house’s interiors in detail. They’ll have an opportunity to talk to some of the owners, find resources and meet with restoration vendors. The ticket price includes an illustrated guidebook with a historical information and a map, and punch and cookies in the garden of one of the homes on tour. Once you have your admission ticket, begin your tour at any home, between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. on tour day. The tour is hosted by the Alameda Architectural Preservation Society (AAPS), a non-profit organization.
