Four decades after the inception of X, one thing is clear: X was not only one of the most influential bands to crash out of the punk movement of the late '70s, but the band's music continues to be sonically groundbreaking today. Songs written during the group's inception are as relevant and inventive today as they were in 1977. The band's early albums, Los Angeles (1980), produced by Ray Manzarek of the Doors, Wild Gift (1981), and Under the Big Black Sun (1982) explored dark love and an even darker L.A. with the unflinching eye of a Raymond Chandler novel. As they released each ensuing album, More Fun in the New World (1983) and Ain't Love Grand (1985), the band continued to grow sonically and politically, fearlessly mixing genres without ever losing its center. Each member went on to explore diverse careers -- careers that included acting, art, writing, producing and multiple side projects. The fact is, no one sounds like X and no one ever will. Catch this legendary band at The Canyon in Agoura Hills.

Growing up outside of St. Louis , Randy and Jason Sklar had a typical suburban upbringing -- playing soccer and baseball after school, hanging out with friends. Then they found comedy. Moving to New York in 1994, the brothers worked at a variety of jobs during the day to support their comedy performances at night. Within a few years, they began to develop their unique style: "a tag team delivery in which one talks over the end of the other's sentence, completing, adding to or reaffirming his comment (much like the raps of The Beastie Boys)," wrote Neil Strauss of the New York Times. Randy and Jason have also guest starred in several TV shows, including an Emmy Award-winning episode of Curb Your Enthusiasm. They starred as conjoined twins in a memorable episode of Grey's Anatomy and as warring agents on HBO's Entourage. They also host their own podcast, Dumb People Town. See them live at Improv of Schaumburg.

Dennis Quaid is the lead singer and rhythm guitarist. He performs many original plus classic hits such as "Spill the Wine," "Gloria" and many more. The band's origins can be traced to one night when Quaid went to see actor Harry Dean Stanton and his longtime band (appropriately named the Harry Dean Stanton Band) perform at an L.A. club. Quaid was invited to join the band onstage. At first reluctant because of his decade-long layoff from music, Quaid finally did perform with the band and was successful enough that James, also a member of Stanton's band, approached Quaid about starting a group of their own. James quickly began recruiting others for the band and it wasn't long before Dennis Quaid & the Sharks, which specializes in "rock 'n' roll and country-soul," was performing at L.A. clubs. The band even throws in a Jerry Lee Lewis song or two in the mix, such as "Great Balls of Fire," which Quaid has firsthand experience performing, having played "The Killer" in a 1989 biopic. Quaid said the shows are as much fun for those in attendance than they are for the band. "(The audiences) have a blast, which is all we want," he said. "I make a complete and utter fool of myself. I think that's the only way to have fun (onstage), instead of trying to pretend to be cool and all the rest of that stuff." Experience Dennis Quaid & The Sharks at The Rose in Pasadena.

Catch this legendary band at The Canyon in Santa Clarita.

Tom Lehrer epitomized the era of satirical humor in the 1950s and 1960s, writing songs which were wickedly naughty yet not x-rated by today's standards in any way. What is most amazing about Lehrer's music is how timeless it has remained, dealing with subjects such as religion, love and nuclear weapons without in any way dating the material. Turned into a musical revue by the producing genius behind Cats and Phantom of the Opera, Cameron Macintosh, Tomfoolery still is one of the most bitingly hilarious two hours of music you will ever hear. A cast of three men and two women will sing and act out Tom's music and send you home from San Francisco's Shelton Theater with a smile on your face and at least a couple of thoughts rattling around in your brain. Tom may have decided to retire from songwriting (as is rumored) "when Henry Kissinger was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize," but his humor remains as a legacy for all of us today.

History called it heroism. They called it high school. Little Rock tells the riveting true story of the Little Rock Nine, the first black students to attend their city's formerly segregated Central High School. What began as their quest for a better education soon became a national crisis, igniting the passions of a divided country and sparking a historic fight for justice in the Jim Crow South. On the cusp of the Civil Rights Movement, a changing world watched as these nine children from Arkansas battled for their rights with only a book and pencil. At once harrowing and hopeful, Little Rock brings urgently to life the Nine's untold personal stories of challenge and resilience, conjuring memories of America not so long ago. From writer and director Rajendra Ramoon Maharaj, this deeply moving play honors the bravery of these young heroes and asks audiences: Would you have had the courage? Delve into the nation's past at New York's Sheen Center.

Yippee Ki-Yay, Father Christmas!
When it first hit the stage in the '70s, Don't Bother Me, I Can't Cope made some pretty big waves; not only did the musical tackle issues of race, politics and feminism, it introduced Broadway to its first African-American female director, Vinnette Carroll. And even 40-some-odd years later, Don't Bother Me, I Can't Cope is as powerful and relevant today as it was back then. In this Encores! Off-Center revival, Tony Award winner Savion Glover (Bring in 'Da Noise, Bring in 'Da Funk) takes the helm as director and choreographer, using Micki Grant's award-winning score to trace the African-American experience through a dazzling mix of song and dance. Don't miss this timely musical revue when it takes the stage of the New York City Center.

But he most loves performing live, and now you can see him when he hits the stage at The Comedy Loft at The Bier Baron Tavern in D.C.

This legendary troupe's recorded more than 30 albums, and their radio specials are featured on NPR stations nationwide four times a year, but there's nothing like experiencing their cutting-edge comedy live at DC's Ronald Reagan Building.
